Were There More Super Bowl DUI Arrests in 2017 Than 2016?

BLOG DUI Are blood breath and urine tests reliable PHOTOThe data is in from CDOT’s “The Heat Is On” anti-drunk driving campaign. Following the festivities of the Super Bowl, the number of DUI arrests in Colorado went down compared to last year. From February 3 to February 6, there were 273 arrests, including 38 by the State Patrol, 29 by Aurora Police Department, 28 by Colorado Springs police and 27 by Denver police.

Last year, the Super Bowl weekend resulted in 325 total arrests, a number likely inflated due to the celebrations resulting from our Broncos’ victory.
The next period of increased DUI enforcement will last from March 10 to March 17, covering the week of St. Patrick’s Day. Last year, 355 were arrested during that period – will it go up or down this year?

The Heat Is On

The Heat Is On is a high-visibility anti-drunk driving campaign run by CDOT and Colorado police. During 12 periods of high enforcement every year, CDOT provides grants to law enforcement agencies allowing statewide overtime DUI enforcement, paid for by state and federal funding. Funding is also granted to CDOT’s Public Relations Office, which uses the money for media relations, advertising and community outreach. You’ve probably seen a few of these campaigns on TV, such as the “Good to Know” campaign to prevent young people from smoking marijuana, or the “Drive High, Get a DUI” campaign, which is self-explanatory. CDOT recently announced a new campaign, which we will be posting about on Wednesday.
