University of Colorado – Colorado Springs Unveils New Vehicle Aimed to Combat Drunk Driving

Draft Beer 20150701 202142 1Say hello to SIDNE, the Simulated Impaired Driving Experience Vehicle. Made possible by a grant from The Allstate Foundation and a part of Drive Smart Colorado, SIDNE is a go-cart styled vehicle designed to educate the public on a variety of important traffic issues. These include the importance of seat belts, proper use of car seats, distracted driving and, of course, drunk driving.

The University of Colorado – Colorado Springs is using a SIDNE vehicle to teach students how alcohol can impair driving. SIDNE operates like a go-cart with additional simulators that delay the application of brakes and make the steering wheel hard to control.

The Effects of Alcohol on Driving

Alcohol has a depressant effect on the nervous system. This means that drivers who are intoxicated could face:

  • Impaired vision. Alcohol can lead to sluggish muscle function in the eyes, altered eye movement, blurriness and worse night vision
  • Reduced reaction times. With reflexes slowed due to alcohol, drivers are less able to react to changing road conditions.
  • Reduced concentration and attentiveness. Alcohol can cause drivers to lose focus or become drowsy while driving.
  • Reduced tracking ability. This means that drunk drivers lose the ability to judge their own positions on the roads, as well as the locations of other cars, road markings and street signs.

The SIDNE vehicle provides a rare insight to sober drivers as to the true effects of alcohol while driving. The vehicle will make its way to high schools, military bases and university campuses around Colorado as Drive Smart Colorado’s campaign continues.

If you have been charged with impaired driving offenses in Colorado, your best chance of minimizing your penalties in to discuss your case with a Colorado criminal defense attorney.
