Marijuana-Infused Beer Is Here. Will It Make You Fail a Drug Test?

Marijuana with Molecular StructureOf course that exists.

Dad and Dudes Brewaria, a craft brewery in Aurora, has recently received approval from the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau to sell their cannabis-infused beer across the United States. The beer, called General Washington’s Secret Stash IPA, has been on sale in Colorado for a good while, but the fact that the beverage will be sold in places where marijuana is not legal might be a bit shocking to some – until you delve into the details.

When we talk about marijuana, usually we’re referring to the kind that gets you high via the chemical THC. The cannabeer does not actually contain any THC. Rather, it contains CBD – cannabidiol – a chemical found in hemp plants that don’t actually get you high. CBD from hemp plants, unlike THC, is legal in all 50 states.

If you were looking for a cold brew that would also get you stoned, you won’t find it here. However, the brewers tout the many health benefits of CBD and the fact that it does not change the flavor profile of the beer as worthwhile reasons to drink it. So, your beer won’t taste like a freshly cut lawn, which we imagine is a positive for most people.

And for those of you worried about whether trying one of these cannabeers might make you vulnerable to failing a drug test, fret not – drug tests typically are searching for THC, and CBD has very little cross-reactivity with the THC test.
