Is Marijuana Getting Stronger?

01123685A study performed in a Colorado laboratory found that modern marijuana is more powerful than the drug used to be. Researchers put 600 samples under the microscope and found a rise in tetrahydrocannibinol (THC, the active ingredient in the potent pot) content, while cannabidiol (CBD, thought to have therapeutic effects) has declined.

You can see in this graph that marijuana potency has been steadily rising over the last few decades. The study reported samples with values close to 30 percent THC, a big jump from the 10 percent partakers used to puff. The increase is presumably a function of the market, with smokers wanting higher THC content for a more robust buzz.

Is Increased THC in Marijuana Dangerous?

This THC increase has led to a slight increase in the number of marijuana-related emergency room visits in the last several years. The stronger effects on the brain can lead to toxic reactions like psychosis.

Because marijuana appears to be getting stronger, marijuana users should take extra care to moderate usage, especially if they plan to get behind the wheel of a motor vehicle. Remember, even though weed is legal in Colorado, driving while under the influence is not. Even prescription marijuana can land you in jail for suspicion of DUI.

If you have been arrested for drug-related driving offenses, do not hesitate to contact a skilled drugged driving lawyer. Enlisting someone with years of legal experience in this field can help you to get your charges lowered or dismissed.
