How Long Does It Take to Eliminate Alcohol from the Body?

Police Lights 20150813 172419 1One way that people will avoid DUI is to have a few drinks and then wait for a few hours for their system to clear the alcohol. This strategy only works, though, if you wait long enough. No amount of coffee or cold showers is going to flush the alcohol from your body, and alcohol metabolizes at a very consistent rate, though it varies from person to person.

On average, it takes one hour for your body to process one “unit” of alcohol. A unit of alcohol amounts to 10 milliliters of pure alcohol, and depending on what your poison is, this amount varies. Here are some examples:

  • A standard glass of wine will have about 2.1 units of alcohol
  • A large glass of wine will have about 3 units of alcohol
  • A pint of regular beer will have about 2 units
  • A pint of high-strength beer or lager will have about 3 units
  • A shot of liquor, depending on the liquor, will be about a unit by itself

So think about it this way – if you drink a six pack of beer, that’s 12 units of alcohol, which will take, on average, 12 hours to dissipate. So, if you are out on a weekday and have to work at 9am, you’d have to stop drinking at 9pm to avoid having any alcohol in your blood whatsoever on your morning commute.

Not trying to be a buzzkill or anything, but this is why you should avoid driving after you’ve been at the bar. You can even be charged with DUI the morning after.
