Colorado Police Crackdown for the Holidays: The Heat Is On

b2ap3 thumbnail BLOG DUI Pot Is Illegal PhotoIn the interests of keeping drunk drivers off the road, the Colorado Department of Transportation and Colorado State Patrol will be boosting enforcement of drunk driving as part of their campaign, The Heat Is On. More officers will be on the roads looking for impaired drivers, and there will be more DUI checkpoints throughout the state.

Last year, 238 people were arrested for drunk driving during Thanksgiving’s The Heat Is On period alone. Another 596 were arrested throughout early December, and another 396 were arrested during New Years.

Avoiding DUI This Holiday Season

If you plan on drinking this holiday, follow these guidelines to help keep you out of the slammer.

  • Know your limits. It’s easy to get carried away when you know you’ve got a few days to sleep off the effects of overdrinking. Pace yourself and alternate alcoholic beverages with nonalcoholic drinks like water to keep yourself sated without going too far. Just because they call the day before Thanksgiving Blackout Wednesday doesn’t mean you should take that as a challenge.
  • Assign a designated driver early.
  • Be prepared to utilize services such as Uber, public transit or taxis to get where you need to go. Download the apps onto your phone before you start drinking.

The next enforcement period will begin on December 2 and run through December 12.

If you are arrested for drunk driving during the holiday season, our Denver DUI lawyers are prepared to help you fight your charges.
