Colorado Marijuana Laws Have Changed – This is How

BLOG OutofStateDUI TPM Picture 01240482xA779BGood news for weed aficionados planning excursions to gorgeous Colorado this summer – recently, Gov. John Hickenlooper signed into law a renewal of the state’s marijuana regulations, this time including a subtle change affecting visitors to the state. Before the renewal, visitors were allowed to possess up to one ounce of marijuana at a time, but only allowed to purchase one quarter of an ounce at a time. Now, the purchase limits have been changed to match those of Colorado residents. All people over the age of 21 are now allowed to purchase and possess one ounce of marijuana at pot shops.

The change is beneficial to visitors in that it removes the annoyance of having to travel to multiple shops in order to get the pot they want, but it also is helpful to the stores themselves. With all customers now on an equal playing field, it will be easier for budtenders and the industry itself to standardize the math of packaging cannabis and related products, such as edibles and concentrates.

Additionally, the rule change means that state laws regarding cannabis are now in line with Colorado’s state constitution, which does not discriminate between residents and visitors.

This change may help bolster Colorado’s tourism this summer – according to a study released late last year by the Colorado Tourism Office, 48 percent of summer travelers were influenced by the idea of legal recreational weed. If you do plan to visit this summer, make sure you finish off your stash by the end of your vacation. It’s legal here, but crossing state lines with it will get you in a lot of trouble. Also be sure not to drive under the influence of marijuana – that’s something the police have been cracking down on in recent years.
